One variant of the apparatus consisted of an in- clined quartz reaction tube containing.the Zn, to which the SiCl 4 was brought by H2 as carriergas. The reaction tube was heated to 950-1050'DC. -in an improved apparatus, SiCl was introduced 4 fromlvaporizer heated to appx. 600 (no carrier gas was necessary) and Zn from another vaporizer heated to 11000 both into, a hori- zontal quartz tube. The lead tubes from the Zn vaporizer to the reaction chamber were also heated (950-9800), as was the funnel used to pour the Zn into the vaporizer (5000) and the c0 .ilthrough Card 1/2 which the SiCl 4 vapors passed (650-7000). Ground connection5 137-58-4-6971 The Manufacture of Pure Silicon by Zinc Reduction of Silicon Chloride were made between the.vario,us components. Ts. V.' grade zinc (99. 199 per- cent Zn) and technical SiC14 purified by distillation in a quartz fractionating column (middle fraction) were used for the experiments. , Spectrographic a- nalysis indicated that fractional distillation diminished the Ca. TEXT: In 1956-1958 Photoele'atria and spectral Iobservations Iof star twinkl ing were carried out at Pulkovo by means of a 250-mm telescope witha slitless spectrograph. Observations in monochromatic light were madeat the slit width'of o.4 mm placed in the spectrolgraph focal plane, and in integrated light by means, of moAnting a plane mirror in front of-the spectrograph prism. The root-mean- square amplitude IT and maximum amplitude of twinkling were! eatimated, For this purpose, a special device was used in the oscillograph.in addition to the records of twinkling. This device made it possible to determine the 6' value directly. Spectral photographic observations were reduced to obtaining -the traces of'3tellar Ca:rd 1/2 S/035/60/000/bO7/003,,A) 18 A0OI/A001 Observations of Star Twinkling With the ACV,5 (ASI-5) Telescope at Pulkovo spectra at a atopped clock0ork. 'The resolving power of a trace'for a star, near, the equator, is /-.,ji/4 sec.~ The law of twinkling amplitude variixtion with zenith distance was determined: C. b.l~ x secZ, at the input objpctive~aperture D=65 MM and 15~-O,)10 (secZ)1,3 at D--2_90 mm. These values oflexponents of secZ agreewell with the theoretical ones. 11'rhe twinkling amplitude at the zenith increases approximately twice at theltransition from D-250 = to D-65 mm. *The twinkling amplitude decrease, observed in integrated light at zenith;dIstances Z > 6701is explained by chromatic twinkling. The amplitude of luminosity changes In the region X;L 5aOO - 700 is equal, ~ according to photometric data of Arace measure- ments, to O~~. The investigation of spectral tracesand spectra, recorded photoelectrically by a consecutive recording'of various spectral regions, has shown that at z < 650) chromatic twinkling does not affect the energy distribution in the stellar continuous spectrum, distortion being great~only at Z > 750, 'There are 7 references. The layers near the surface,of the earth exercise no essential influence on -the scintillation of stars, but the higher layers do. The-thick ness of the-layer . reeponsible for the scintillation of~'stars may be estimated aa amounting to 10 to 15 km,'in which case the'upper part of the layer plays the main role. For calculating chromatic,' scintillation it is sufficient to calculate the coefficient of the correlation between the fluctuations of the amplitude in such an idealized case in which two plane 'monochromatic Card 1/' (with the wave lengths and propagate in one waves ~) On the Chromatic Scintillation of Stars SOV/.1.10-124-3-20/67 direction through the atmosphere without, diffraction.
