In 20 patients an anti-alcoholic attitude was suggested.during a superficial hypnotic slumber which was turned into a normal sleep of 15 to 20 min. After awakening, persuasion treatment was applied. In 5 exceptiomlly severe cases the method was modified in such a way that during the hypnotic state vomiting'on alco- holic olfactory and gustatory irritations was verbally'provoUed, after which the patient was left in a quiet hypnotic sleep of 15 to 20 min. duration. The procedure lasted from 50 to 60 min. During the 2 or 3 first sessions a'post-hypnotic.com~- mand was given concerning the use of alcohol. The .1st variant of. the treatment was effected in 4 to 8. the 2nd In 4 to 12 sessions taking place once a week. The choice 34 ft of the, pattents was made according to 3 criteria: (1) c6atraindication to ethetind- spomorphine; (2) ineffectiveness of the usual cure; (3) cases in which hypn6t!c trtat- ment 'was most promising'. Out of the 25 dipsomaniacs treated this way,~ A2 of whom had been diagnosed as chronic cases, 5 abstained afterlhis -treatment,- 2 of them for more than a year, 2 for more than half a year. (The abstinence 'period of the 5th patient could not be ascertained.) Twelve are considered as sociall 'adapt- ed a ince they do not drink to excess more than once or twice a ~ea r. In 6 cases the therapy was unsuccessful, and in 2 patients catamnestic follow-up was notpossible. Older experiments are quoted concerning methods based on similar principles.
