The specific features of an operator's ai.i
an automatic control system arelused'to.demonstratei.a nt~nber of
-problems in.engincering psychology. -These fpatures,'.drev that the
operator is prcvcntcd from observi% directly the 6ontrolLed'objects
and must instead use transmittod information; that the operrator is,
dealing with models of real ob.',Iects and must reconstruct:some infor-
mation which is not trancmitted~or Iis losi'during trainamission, he~
must organize this informatioh and make predictions,, he must make..
decisions between alternative.actions. The subject.of engineeringi
an operator's ~,activity in
'psychology is defined as the study of
.dealing with physical controlmodels inatead of real obj6cts. The
.main problem is to find such a design for these models WIiich taloes
into account the operator's kunctional characteristits; and~abilitios.

!Among these hunran factors two are discuaacd in detail: dffective
cadirw,of information and the apeed of reception, ~Effective coding
depe~as on the loperative units of perception' which c an' lead- to,
the construction of a natural way of coding,, eaaily,~ acquired by the
operator. The speed of reception depends on the channel.capacityll
of the operator. The reception 'speed is alao'a good mewoure of the.
.qffectiveness of the codiN oyatem. The measurement of kIeception'
.speed requires the definition of a unit of perception. It is con,
cluded that the solution of small specific problems'without a uni'
fied method of approach is of Little value.in this, field. There

ABiTRACT: The resistance of a hydrofoil near the surface of the earth,
is calculated to be about 20% less than the resistance Iof.a. hydrofoil
witb an elliptical circulation distribution. With such a distribution
of the circulation, the minimum in the induced resist~ance'wlll occur
when the component of the induced velocities is constant, Applying:
this condition to the equation for a hydrofoil in the thres, dimensional
flow of a fluid of finite deptb, the following singular integral-
differential equation has been obtained for determination:of the optimum
distribution of the oirculationt

ABSTRACT: Speech-sound perception cannot:be reduced.to.;the p6rception 6t
sound spectral differences. P6netic.hearing is based on dikinction of
phonemes. The same honemi.- can be conveyed by various sbunds, de"ndi

on the adjacent phonemes and other factors. Two sou,nds that convey two
phoneraes in one language may represent two: variants of- the' ame phoneme in
another language. In compiling speech-intelligibility tible&,~ phonetic
peculiarities of every language: should be' taken into acccunt. ..'Use of
international tables based on the Esperanto language makes no sense.
