radiology personnel, 15 mining) exposed to radiation for 2 to 30
years and seen 1958-1962: of 50 in which some form and degree of
radiation disease was diagnosed, 39 were considered severe epough to
require change of working assignment. The 39 included,6 with
radiation dermatitis as only symptom and 4 with mixed skin and systemic
signs; 3 with hematologic changes only. Comprehensive data. One

Abstract: On irradiation of rats vdth X-rays in a ddse MOO; intra-
peritoneal administration of homologous bone marrow ims leps effective
(35% survival) than intravenous injection (65% survival). ~Stuj~r of the
peripheral blood, bone marrowj, and inclusion of FeW In erythrocytes :
indicated that there was no significant difference iA the~regeneration
of hemopoiesis between animals treated by the two methods. On trans-
plantation by intraperitoneal injection of rat bone marrow to irradiated
mice, granulocytes containing alkaline phosphatase (i.e., rat granulo~ytes)
were not found in the bone marrow of the mice. This indicated that donor
elements were not implznted in the bone marrow of rocipioA animals, after
intraperitoneal introductian. The rapid regeneration after intrcparitoneal
administration of bone marrow is woplained by humoral stimulation, Uhile,
the high therapeutic effect on intrannous administration is ascribed to

TB'XT.: The present study was undertaken (a) since.~acute hemp rrhage
IsEkely to be one of the most frequent complications occurring si-
mul,taneously wit-h radiation injury and besides (b) to decide whether
patients, who suffertd acute hemorrhages can safely be given r adi6~-
therapy, and (c) because the relevant literaturefdata are,of contra-
dictory character. 80 male guinea pigs were divided.into 4 groups:
1) 10 viere bled from the jugular vein, causing t,loss of 25 4, of the
total blood; 2) 30 were exposed to X-rays (300 VJ at a distance of
50 cm; ~) 20 were irradiated 30 min. after the bleeding and'47) 20
on the-3rd day after the bleeding, i.e. Aen t,-.e sti-
mulating effect of the blood loss upon ~67~a'topoiesis was at its peak

counts were checked daily up to the 5th ~ay and then every second
day until the 30th day. 17hereas in the- let eroup the red cell count
is gradually restored to the original level, it hovis a aleop tall
in animals irradiated after the hemorrhage, a fall whioh is'le8s
marked in the 4th group. The reeeneration is sloviest in the 3rd J
roup. The reticulocytes disappeared completely in the 2nd group
radiation only), but persisted'p even in the aplastic period, in the
~
3rd and 4th groups (hemorrhage and radiation). ITeliminary blood
loss exerts therefore a protective el"fect againa 't raaiation as in
the hyperplastic bone marrow a greater number of erythroblasts . ap-
pears to survive.. The preliminary stimulation ot hemptopoiesis.~
seems to counteract the usual suppression of bl:,,od cell prolifera-
tion b- radiation. This compensation is# howeve;~, not completo, as
shown by the further fall. in the red cell count after radiation.:
The fact that the nrot-ective effect is more marked in the 4th~grOUD
supports the view !hat this effect is based uponthe stimulation:of
the hematopoietic apparatus where stimulation is knovin to reach its
peak on the third day, The restoration of reticulocytes, neut:rophi-
ies and platelets is more rapid aftex combined blood loss and irra-
diation than after irradiation only. This also applies to later

periods when the primary stimulation caused by the he*.Torrhage must
h.,ve subsided. Hence the existence is postulated of an,indirect sti-,
nulating mechani3m consistingg for example, of the formation and
accumulation of hem.atopoietic substances in the bloodifollowing acu-
