aTheoratical Foundations of Deep Carbon Oxidation In Aetallic Melts"

No 8, Aug 73, pp 15-20
Abstracto The possibilities of refining a melt of complex composition and
determining the physical &:W. cheaical principles of deep oxidation of
Impurities In the oxidizing perioel of melting were investigated. The
thermodynamic equations for calculation of the minimus amount of carbon
for a maximum amount of oxygen in relation to temperature axe given. These
equations indicate how to achieve maximum decarburization of heats.
YAlting te5ts were conducted in five-ton are furnace* from~which It was
possible to quantitatively evaluate the kinetic cham.~cterlstics and to
reveal the optimum conditions of the oxidation period during melting with
the purpose of developing new smelting technology,-especially for low-
carbon alloyed steel in open are furnaces. Three figuresp.ten. bibliogmphic

to consider the investii~ated slarg system as a pseudot6rnary sYste1q. in which
CaP2 and A120 3 r-pPear as diluents. From the pozition~ of the behavior -of the
slag system as a pseudo-ternary syst-em, calculation fornilas are developed on
the basis of experimental data. Results of calculations by the su~rested
formulas agree with experimental data. Three figures, one:Wr)le, twelve for-

No 1, i971, pp 18-22
Abstract: The process of carbon oxidation in the presence of chromium and
nickel plays an important part in the technology of melting stainless aud
heat-resistant steels. This, study shows that patterns, of critical concen-
trations determine both the mechanism and.kinatics of:an alloy melt. The
below-critical region of carbon concentrations revejil~ three stages which
can be affected by the alloying element. A change to the film process of
indirect carbon oxidation at stages 11 and III practically eliminates the
effect of the different intensities of the parallel oxidation of iron and
chromium on the metal's decarburization rate. The inhibiting effect of
chromium and the accelerating effect of nickel on theprocess of decarburi-
zation in the C
