(from RZh-Radiatekhnika, No 6, Jun,71, Abstract Ho 6D2,8 P)
Translation: A device is proposed for reception of phase telegraphy
signals. The device operates by the method of phase comparison, The
unit contains a line for delay by the length of a packet, which is con-
nected to one input of the frequency converter, and al,so a phase detector.
The input signal is sent together with the difference freque-ncy from the
output of the frequency converter (ar, a reference sifgial) to the inputs
of the phase detector. In order to provide compensation far phase shift
in a wide range of input signal frequency deviation, the input signal is
sent to the other input of the frequency detector thrOugh a circuit
made up ofa frequency doubler connected.in series with a line for delay
by half the length of a packet.

Abstract: Disturbance of cortical vigilance states which occur in lesions of
the brain stem and madial cortex is examined. Understandi-rij, of Ian_-Uafe is
shown to be dependent upon the level of vigilance,. Sxperirw~nts to discover the
mechanism of conditioned responoes with associated, words indicated that with
alert persons, similar sounding words elicited no reaction, but words of
similar meanin(; aroused conditioned vascular rcsponsefi,~ Coilditioned responses
occurred in retarded children with words sijnilar in sai.,nd as well as those
similar in meaning. Inbeciles reacted only to similar. mvxling words and rot
at all to semantically related words. The retarded children reacted mare to
similar meaninEs when alert; when tired their reactions to vord-s of si~~Uaar
sound increased, The experiments exposed the subjects,to pain associated
with certain words and checked indiv-idual reaction to 1~raups of urvrelet,~-d words
and groups of words related by sound or jreanizwr. It ciLn he concluded t?.~at
decrease of tone of the cortex with fatigue or patholollical conditions disturbs
nerve connections associated with speech. Further resoarch in pham.-Icojogical
sturbance of cortical activity is indicated.

"Tagging the Mountain Pika With Radioactive Cobalt"
Leningrad, Zoologicheskiy Zhurnal, No 11, 1971, pp 1,728-1,731
Abstract: A cobalt 60 source (with an activity of 57 meq of Ra) was implanted
in the scapular region of a young female mountain pika (Ochotona alpiaa Pall.)
in western Sayan (1450 m above sea level)., The animal, which was tracked witb
two field radiometers could be detected several doze6 meters away while above
ground and for several meters when it moved~among stones. Direct tracking
for 21 hours and 17 minutes over a period of 4 days revealed that the animal
spent about 34% of the time in feeding, 26% in moving about, and 40% in
cresting. one old and two young pikas were observed ia the same area,--
Although there were no signs of hostilityj the territorial principle seetred
well established.

"Radioactive Tracing of Izodes persulcatus Ticks"
Leningrad, Parazitologiya, Vol 5, No 31 W./Jun 7-1o p'p~281-IB8
Abstracts Two radiotracer methods were used for the longterm study of ticks
(for periods up to five years), since the lifespan of the encephalitis-carrying
tick is considered to be 3-5 years. The first method was d-4fficult since it
did not produce a sufficiently high radioactivity in tim labeled larvae. The
method involves subcuticular inoculation of 12 females with a 25 microcurie
dose of labeled glucose saline solution. Lu~vae from these females numbered
1,500-2,300 within 16-20 days Nith a radioactivity of 0,2-Z.2 pulses/see
0-&7.2 pulses.see per crushed larva. After one monthi larvae becaiae ticks.
The maximum activity of larvae and ticks was measured and fowid to vaxy --
depanding on the nunber of days, between treatment and -ugg-lityIng. Larval
activity ranged from IP to 20 impulses/second#, rarely from )0 to O'D impulr-eal
eicond, The other radiotracer hathod used allows one ~-o obtaln labeled laxvae

radioactive substances. White mice were used as radioactive blood donors, since
they have a relatively high resistance to iadioactivlty ir. comparison with
other animals. Iabeled glycine was intxaparitonealljr adninistered to white
zice. Ten mice were used to feed 4,00.0 ticks and clD!;e to 300 nymphs. I-lost
of the rudloactive ticks and nymphs were used in field experiments; 1.50 ticks
and 30 nymphs were kept in the laboratory. It was found that the activity
of live engorged larvae was 0.5 to I.i, pidses/see and that of crushed ones
was 4 to 10 pulses/sec. The activity of nymphs was consicLerably higher. The
second radiotracer method is recommended because a ltLbel of sufficiently high
radioactivity could be obtained and maintained for ailonger tine period. The
development phases of ticks can thue be,easily followed by the second method.

"Optimization of a Ship Course-Reeping System~'
Leningrad, Sudostroyeniye, No 10, 1971, pp 40-42
Abstract: A mathematical simulation method is proposed for optimization of a
ship course-keeping system. The control system and results of the simulation
are depicted graphically. Use of a relay course-keepin$ systen with one con-
trol input interval permits a decrease in the energy losses during maneuvering
to be obtained by comparison with other relay systems. The proposed relay-
course-keeping system has a great advantage as a result of simplification of
the operating conditions of the steering system. Practical implementation of
the developed system does not rQquire significant changos in -tile existing
course-keeping system especially since it can easily be.made optimal with re-
spect to speed. The Investigated principle for constructing a coursc-keepinr~.
system for the manativering mode can also be used for the autoinatic course
stabilization mode. Optimalmess of operation of the syqtem la based on mini-

Translation: Results from studying the process of machining ferrite plates
by the chemical pickling method are presented. The surface atate and the
pickling rate are investigated as functions of Clio nature of the pickling
agent, its concentration, and temperature. It is pointed out that for a
VT-2 type ferrite, the best pickling agent is a mixture of acids. The
magnetic properties of the ferrite do not change during the pickling
process. It is noted that chemical pickling can serve as tiae technologi-
cal proce s used to create =icr_-&o1es and also complea: designs and reliefs
on the surfaces of ferrite plates. There are 9 illustrations and an 8-
entry bibliography.

"Effect of 2-Bromopentane on ImmunobiologicIal Reactivityll
Hoscow, Gigiyena Truda i Professional'nyye Zabolevaniya, No 10, 1971, pp 54-56
Abstract: Phagocytosis and sensitivity to Staphylococcal infection were studied
in mice exposed for 4 hours daily for 4 months to 0.09 mg/L of 2-bromopentane
(an intermediate product of the synthesis of thiopental and pentobarbitol) and
then inoculated with a Staphylococcal culture. Phagocytosis wzs found to be
depressed after 30 to 60 days of intoxication; the phagocytic Index and degree
of digestion were markedly lager than in the control. In expwied mice infected
with Staphylococei, the inf lammatory-necrot.ic process developed more sladly and
was completed sooner than in the control. Thus, while chronic inhalation of
2-bromopentane inhibited phagocytosis and slowed the development of inflaruna-
tion, it increased the animals' resistance to Staphyiococcal sepisis. The
phagocytic system remained capahle of reacting to a specitic antigen (Staphy-
lococci). The author shares A. V. Volkova's view that thin inhibition of
phagocytosis induced by some chemical and physical factors does not always
signify a decrease in natural immunity.
