"Determination of the Thickness and Radius of a Sphox[cal Shell an the Basis
of Echo Signals"
Moscow, Mekhanika Tverdogo Tela, No 6, Nov-Dec 72, pl,-i 60-66
Abstract: The discussion concerns echo signals frow. an elastic spheric,11
shell that are evoked in an unbounded ideal compres4;1,ble fluid by the action
of a sinusoidal sounding pulse of finite length, By mathenatical simulation
of the process of formation of the echo signal At is ei; tali 1A 4-lied that for a
given material of the shell, depending upon the thicki~css v,f the Miell and
its radius a frequency range of the sounding pulse coi be avolved, at 1411ch
the clantic deformation of the uhell exertij a substanUal influence upon the
structure and amplitude of the echo sigiial, as well, ao frequc!ncy rangel.; at
which the echo signal from an elastic shell differs l4ttle from the echo
signal from an absolutely rigid sphere of the same radius. It is, slicnin that
by selecting the frequency of the sinusoidal sounding pulsi, from the rar;e
of strong influence of the elaqLlc deformation of a sholl upun tile echo
signal, it is possible to determine on the basis of tho echr., i~ignal not only
the distance to the shell and its radius, but also the thickness of the shell.

Abstract: An approximate method is buggested for calcolatini; the echo trignal

Arvalis (Pall.) (Rodentia, Cricetidae)
Moscow, Zoologicheskiy Zhurnal, Vol 51, No 1, Jan 720 PP 157-161
Abstract: Ylicrotus subarvalis f4eier, Orlov, Skholl sli, n., a new species of
common vole, is described. MorpholoCicaUy, M. suban, alis sp. n. is very
close to M. arvalis, differing from it only in the set of chr*mosoms (2r. 1. 54,
chromosomes are mostly acrocentric; in M. arvalits .1-)n -, 46, ou-arrosorf'.ea am
mostly metacentric). Another point of distinction is the shape and din-enslons
of spermatozoa. Voles with 46- and 54-chromosomes intarbreeil readily, but
always yield infertile progeny. 'The twin species have extensive ranges, which
are to a considerable extent sympatric.. M. anralls apparently has greater dis-
tribution, and Is encountered In more highly varied :UiX11qcLLpes than in the
case for M. subarvalis sp. n.

intensity. In order to determine whether this provenUirts- efff!~(.'t' really
exists, the authors studied the influence which preLiminn.ry at'aptation to
physical stresses and high-altitude hypoxia has on the ccmcentration of AT11,
phosphorylation potential, and the concentration of glyce1qen and lactate in
the myocardium during acute overloading of the heart causing CI)IIIIlete col-

does indeed take place. An e-qa1yals of these results tmd data or various
