While analysis of traces on weapons by which individuals, axe injured has improved, further research in needed on histological analysin of such traces, Detenaina- tion. of time of death has been. a subject of extensive biochemical reseaxch. Some research results, are lnadequ#e because of :the absence of standaxdiza- tion in research and in the format for publishing imsults4 Standardization :is also needed in methods for deteraining alcoholic intoxication. Little research has been carried out on peisonal differences ir. xesponse to particular levels of intoxicants. Thus far, emphasis on research -that w.)uld improve establishment of live vs. st.1.11 birth has been low. Great advances have been made in establishing causes of an i-eventing mudden death, chiefly due P USSR :KALWZNKO# V. This study concerns specifications for obtaining carbides of transition metals of the IV-V.grours TiC,, ZrC HfCxq NIC and X, TaCx within the regions of their homogeneity by synthesis from their respective powders and acetylene black' In vacuum. U*--e was made of Ti, Zr, Hf w - Nb I Ta powders and acetylene black; whiah was prei'ired At 800'C for two hours in on argon atmosphere Ito remove:moisture and; adsorbed gases. The J~ 9R Poroshkovaya Metallvxgiya., N q. 10, Oct 70, pp 20-22 formulation of a given composition was computed from the reaction eqi;ation: Me+xC::~WC., where x is the C/Me atomic 1ratio. The+ --synthesis was performed at a residual pressure of 1.2,10-4 rm Hg. At 900-10000C there appeared to be an increase in residual pressure due to the libtration of moisture aand gases. The material was therefnre, held isothermally for one hour. A further rise in temperature did not impair the vacuum. The::material was cooled at a rate of 5 deg/min to 600'3C and the-i coole& in the f-4irnace. to room temPerature. Thismakes it advant,_u,-;eous to compress them to maximum density, but the high chaxre of the electron in relation to its mass makes this difficult. The method described in this article for compressing, segments of a tubular electron beam irriolves three stepsi a) electron tubes are rearranged into rotating electron rings moving along an axis; b) the rings are subjected to radial compression in a. spatially in areas Ing, static ipagnetic field; c) the com- pressed rings are again reformed into sections.of a tubular electron bealft moving parallel to the axis, differing, ftom the Initial segments by their snaller dimensicns and higher density. Abstract: Comparisons are mAde of the errors resultinz from the use o4' exact and approximation equations for light attenuation and scattering problems anui the con- ditions under which the approximation Oquations yield~accG-t~tably accurate ansuers. An approximation equation for absorption gives attenuaLion coefficients within an error of 3;~o' for all scattering sphi, res ~'hav--Lng a chari~cteriqtic iUmension of 0.2. For larger spheres, the fquation applies oKly to~limited regions of Lfl~rrllaction index and absorpti0n~ iruiex%' es. When the absorption index is VP..LU < 0001. a more exact equation is recoait~endad because the approximation equation yields Rayleigh scattering coefricients with errors eocceeding 5~. When the ab- sorption coefficient is between 0.1 and 0.2 and the rafraction index is between 1.01 and 1.1, the approximation equation can be used even uhan 1 < P< 3. An "T cient h < -.equation is given for calculating the Rayleigh scattwing uoef w an P 0. with an error not exieeding 2 to:3%. Orig. art. has'4 figs. and 2 refs.
