Thei-e is not a sound methodological basis for emphasizing the different biological effect of :the north and soVth magnetic poles. If this difference is observed, one can speak of different quantitative levels of action caused by significant gradlents of the magnetic coordinates. Moscow u1nareasina the Strength of Steel l7GlS Against Corrosive Cracking by Refining 0 It With Synthetic Slag" Kiev, Fiziko-Khimicheskaya 11,101anika Materialov, Vol 7. No 4, 1971. PP 3 ;1-33 Abstract: The terkiency of carbon steel toward corrosive cracking is deter mined to a considerable degree by the quantity and sizes of microstructural defects, which are foci of corrosive mechanical cracks. Therefore the re- fining Gf steel by liquid synthetic slAgdn a crucible, which provides purif-i- cation from harmful admixtures, nonmetallic inclusions, and an increase in density, should decrease its sensitivity tD corrosive crsakir4, A study was made of the influence of this means of refining upon th-e stability of low- alloy steel 17G13 against cracking in an alkaline electrolyte and a nitrate electrolyte. One batch of' steel was produced by the conventional open-hearth technology, and the other was refined with synthetic sLig in a crucible. It VASILENKO, 1. 1., et al, Fiziko-Khimicheskaya Mekhanika Materialov, Vol 7, No 4. 1971. pp 31-33 was established that the refining of low-alloy steel by synthetic slag con- siderably increases its resistance against corrosive cracking in an alkaline solution and in a nitrate solution. The greater tendency of the steel malted by the conventional ODen-hearth method to corrosive craoking is caused prin- cipally by the presence of a large quantity of conside.~ably large nonmetallic inclusions. 1 figure. 3 tables. 5 references. 2/2 77 USSR UDC 538-221+538-245 BEIM, K. The urpose of the Dres- ent article was to attempt to fill this gap. Pure rare-earth metals (ob- tained from the State Scientific Research and Planning 1rstitute of the Fare Fetals Indust- try ) were studied, as well as dysprozium-holmium-erbium system alloys. Their magnetization curves were neasured in fields up to 50 kOe at 4.20 K, values for coercive force and remanence were determined, and hysteresis loops were taken. 7~777-7 36 ------- moscow, V sb. The relation between the casting temperature and the mechanical properties of the steel were studied. The temperature of the wtal was reasured in the ladle directly in front of the casting form'by a thermocouple and potentiometer setup. At lover casting temperatures, the mechanical properties were improved. The relation between impact strength aK and casting temperature t is aK = 123 0.071 t. The strength (rB is related to the casting temperature t by 220 O.OW t andthe specific elongation (5 to casting temperature by 123 0-062 t- Cb--mical composition also affects the mechanical properties. 'SarAples for mechanical testing were cast from metals of the raw composition et temperatures of lk4O and 13850C- They were cooled in alcohol-liquid N2 mixtures and tested for Impact strength frm +100 to -1000C. Samples cast at the lower temperature had greater strength, 43 7~ USSR VOC 669.lag:621-746-75 VOLCHOK, 1. P., SHULIT and PINCHUK, YE. I., Zaporozhlye "Normetallic Inclusions and Failure of Tool Steel" Moscow, Izvestiya kkademii Nauk SSR, Metally, No 1, Jan-Feb 1970, pp 109-112 Abstract: A description is given of a special attachment for a metallographic microscope designed for the study of the, behavior of nGa-metallic inclusions during stretching of a speciman-microsection. The results o~ investigations of steel with different types of non-metallic inclusions showed that the form of the inclusions has a significant effect on the origin and propagation of microcrat~ks. Eutectic sulfides of the second type contributed most to the formation and pro- pagation of microcracks, while globular inclusions of th-a first type contributed the least. A correlation dependence was established betireen the extent of non- metallic inclusions in steel and the magnitude of effective surface energy. 015 UNCLASSIFtED: PROCESS,1014 UATE--3t~OMO k,--~USULTS OF TESTING METHOUS RjR DETEXAL NAT LON UF GASES IN I U14 -U- i6ij
