AT MID LATI-rUDES THESE MEASUREMENT WERE PERFORMED UNDER THE PROGRAM OF COMPLEX STUDY OF EFFECTS CAUSED BY SOLAR FLARES. AMCNG OTHEREXPERIMENTSt TWO ROCKETS WERE LAUNCHED WITH ION-MASS SPECTROMETERS ON BOARD* THE LAUNCHINGS TOOK PLACE ON APRIL I AND 20, 19691 AT 1700 AND 17-4 LTp RESPECT:IVELY. THE FIRST SOUNDINGS CHARACTERIZE THE UNDISTURBED IONOSPHERE AND THE SECOND THE DISTURBED ONE* BECAUSE AVERAGE !NTENSITY.MAGNETIC STORMS:WERE OBSERVED BETWEEN THESE TWO LAUNCHINGS. IN PARTICULARt ABSOLUTE ION CONCENTRATION INCREASE WAS OBSERVED IN THE DISTURBED-IONOSPHERE REACHING ITS MAXIMUM EFFECT AT 99 KM. THE PREDOMINANT UON CONCENTRATION RATIO 0Z(PLlJS)-NO(PLUS) ALSO BECAME.DIFFERENT. AT POLAR LATITUDES THE ROCKE WAS LAUNCHED AT 2358 LT ON MARCH ZLOURING UNOISTRUZIED MAGNETIC TA SHOW THE SPORADIC E WAS CONDITICNS. THE IONOSPHEKIC STATION DA OBSERVED AT THIS TIME AT THE 100 KM:ALT,ITUDE. ~FROM At! The AS consists of the power block control block, timer, safety device, and a sparking block for are igifition, The arc current is controlled in the 5-50. amp range, the power,. used by the control block Is.one watt. The unit is naturally.colled by air. The dimensions ofthe AS are 5OOx5OOx4OO mm. A two year service experience of the AS has demonstrated its high degree of reliability and stabill-ty in operation.
