Title i On the TransformtIon of Function in Individual Devolopment
of Animals. (Significance of A. N. Severtsov's Thaching on
Tn*s of Phylogenetic Changes of Organs in Investigatim of
Individual Developrient)
Orig Put, :Zool. zh. 1957, 3E, No. 1. 4-25.
Abstract :Transformation of functions in phylogenetic development, es-
tablished by A. N. Severtsov in his study of Types of phylo-
genetic cnanges in orgEws., also occur at diff,~rerit stages
of individual development. Concrete examples of 2 courses
of transformation of functions in ontogenesis are examined:
1) substitution of function, and, 2) change of function. 'Die
function of an orgem is not United by the perfornances which
are characteristic of adult animals. -The study of function

and the correct understanding of the neaning of the "function"
P.nd of its role in the activj~y of the organism is a primary
ta k of the science and practice of contemporary biology.
Function is a vito-i rmnifestation., the reaction of the livc-
organism having an %daptive si&mificance in tne interaction
of the organism with its environment. The reactions of the
developing organism in its interaction with As environnerft,
appearing in its function, can fulfill such performances, not
having anything in cormon with the definitive functions of
the rdult organlani. However, these very reactions deten-,ine
the condition, structure and -definitive funct'.on in its sub-
sequent development. The uost complete teaching of the tr-ans-
forrmT,ion of functions in phylogcaesis was develpped by Se-
vertsov. During ontogenesis the organisLis cl-tange the condi-
tions of existence many times, ruid. accordingly in c nultiforn
way the functions of animals becu.)e transforTied as expedient
.eactions of the organiso, which correspond to the condl-
tions of its developrient. -- L. V. Danilova.

quaternary ammonium salts can be inteneified considerably by
introducing raultiple bonds into the hydroc&rbon chain. This
assuaption was later proven by pharmacological studies conducted
by Yu. N. Shanin and 1. 1. Baryshnikov who observed that the
introduction of a double bond in the hydrocarbon chain between two
nitrogen atoms of bia-pyridine derivatives increases the ganglio
bl,xking pmporties of the substance and that these characteristics
were most vividly demonstrated by (1,4)-bia-pyri6ine-pentene-2

TITLE: Measurement of the diurnal variations of the brightness temperature of a
forest on the 10-ca wavelength
SOURCE: AN SSSR. Izvestlya. Vizika atmosfer-I i okeana, v. 2, no. 7. 1966, 758-761
TOPIC TAGS: diurnia variation, scattering coefficient, light scattering, brightness
temperature, forest
ABSTRACT: To deLermine the diurnal variations of brightness Xemperature' of a forest
on the 10-cm wavelength, measurements were carried out with a 1.5-m-diameter antenna
with the width of t;se main lobe of the antenna pattern being about 6* with an eifici-
ency of 0.95; the sonsitivity of the receiver was about SK at a time constant of 1 sec.
The area of the investigated forest consisted mainly of coniferous trees about 20 M
high. The measurements were taken during the sumer and w:nter. The diurnal vari-
ation of the absolute sumer temperature was recorded by a thermograph. The scatter-
ing coefficient of the antenna relative to the part of the antenna pattern occupied by
the forest was determined from the expression for the brightness temperature of a

source of radio espission based on measure..ents of the antenna temperature of the
forest under conditions close to isothermal. It was found that absolute measurements
of the brightness temperature of a forest require an accurate consideration of lateral',
radiation from the subjacent surface of the earth which is not covered by the forest.

TITLE: A Transition Equation for Conductors Suspended at Different

PERIODICAL: Elektrichostvo, 1959, Nr 5, pp 69-71 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Formula (1) is given here at first. It is the traneitLozL
iquation for conductors suspended at equal height if.cray
the atmosphoric conditions change. The use of thije formula
for conductors suspended at different heighte leads to errors.
A formula (11) applicable to any height differences of the
suspension points is derived here. The basis for the deriva-
tion of this formula is the exact transition equation based
on the oatenary equation. A parabolic approximation c= be
obtained from formula (11). It is shown that tha tzar-sitica
equation derived by I. A. Lopatin (Rof 1) doom not consider
an essential aircumetanoop namely that the voltage is unequal
in different line cross sections and-is highest in the -sun-
pension points. This circumstanGa must, however!. be considered
at great differences in height of the ausponsion poivto. 1i
