MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Logistics
THROUGH Chief, Real Estate and Construction Division, OL
SUBJECT : Funds for New Air Handlers
REFERENCE Computer Systems Planning Report dtd 6 Jun 74
by OJCS
A request for guidance in the funding of $14,000 for the
procurement and installation of new air handlers in room GC03,
office of Joint Computer Support (OJCS), is requested in para-
graph 6.
2. The referent report identified a matrix of generalized
space and utility requirements against various computer configura-
tion assumptions through FY 1978. Specific equipment locations
were not included in the report.
3. The specific equipment location for Milestone No. I of
the report, the installation of the IBM 370/158-2, has now been
identified. The unit is scheduled to be located in the southwest
quadrant of GCO3 served by perimeter air handler Nos. b and 7.
4. As previously identified, the underfloor congestion and
multiple heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
serving the GC03 area present indeterminacy in HVAC designs.
Within the constraints of this indeterminacy, analysis indicates
that the existing air handlers may not have the capacity to meet
the increased requirements of the 370/158-2 installation. In lieu
of an indepth engineering study and relatively extensive modifica-
tions in the instrumentations and control of the HVAC systems, the
only sure alternative to insure an acceptable environment will
exist to support the installation in the area is to aerate air
handler Nos. 6 and 7 from a 10-ton rating to a 20-ton rating.
This will be an ad hoc action to insure adequate results for a
specific installation in a specific area. This action will not
contribute to the resolution of the overall HVAC problems in the
OJCS Computer Center, nor will it necessarily be effective if the
location of the 370/158-2 is altered to a new location in a
different quadrant of the Center.
5. OJCS representatives are in agreement that uprated air
handlers are necessary, but advises that OJCS STAT

SUBJECT: Funds for New Air Handlers
PY 1975 funds are not available for this unanticipated requirement.
The budgetary cost estimate for procurement and installation of the
uprated units is $14,000.
6. There is mutual agreement between Real Estate and
Construction Division and OJCS that air handier Nos. 6 and 7 must
be uprated to insure that an adequate environment will exist to
support the new 370/158-2 computer. Neither QJCS nor OL has pro-
grammed funds in PY 1975 for this unanticipated requirement. OJCS
has advised that funds are not available, and has requested OL to
identify funds. Guidance is requested in the identification of
approximately $14,000 for the uprating of air handler Nos. 6 and 7.
