SUBJECT: Impact of Projects SAFE and ADSTAR on
Telephone Facilities
REFERENCE: Memo from Chief, - to Chief, RECD STATINTL
dtd 12 May 77, Subject! Impact of
Project SAFE on Telephone Facilities
1. Planning for the SAFE and ADSTAR computer centers has
progressed to the point where it is necessary to review those
preliminary assumptions which were made in the early planning
stages of the project. One area of great importance is that
of continuity of telephone service to the entire GE Corridor
of the Headquarters Building. The referent memorandum, pre-
pared by your office, stated that the ADSTAR area would be
served from the GE0422 satellite telephone closet via the
underfloor duct system existing in the area. In coordinating
the design of the ADSTAR system with the ADSTAR Project
Manager, this satellite telephone closet falls directly between
a proposed wall separating the processing area from the Unin-
terruptible Power Supply (UPS) area. This presents a signif-
icant problem to both the Logistics project team designing the
UPS area and the ADSTAR project team designing their facility.
It is, therefore, requested that)our office study this situa-
tion and inform us whether this satellite closet (GE0422)
could be removed from the area without jeoparcdizing phone ser-
vice. Our understanding is that the remaining area will require
minimal phone service.
The GE78 satellite telephone closet will remain in its
present area and we will coordinate with the Information Systems
Security Group to ascertain whether this closet must be shielded
in any special manner. We will coordinate these findings with
your office.
3. In order that)ou might fully evaluate the impact of
these two projects on telephone service in the area, it is now
