Dear Alex:
I appreciate your letter of 2 July 1954 regarding. the
possible investigation of CL! by the McCarthy Committee and
the proposals by Peter Frelinghnysen in H. A. 9660.
I bad several talks with Peter Frelingbuysen and
fe,el that he is taking a constructive and helpful attitude with
regard to our problems here; however. I assume that it would.
1=practicable, and possibly unwise, to attempt to rush through
on this sonnet complex subject in the few remain-
eeks of the present session.
. As y have seers, Mr. Herbert Hoover is setting up a
Task force under the Commission on. Organization of the Executive
J&rsnich of the Government, to be presided over by General Mark
Mark, which will institute an early examination of our organization-
al "top. I propose to lay before General Clark, when he starts his
work, copies of the various bills which have been submitted. includ-
ing Mike lds s +eld's proposal, that of Peter Frelinghuysen and
Wis. Under use conditions possibly it would be wisest to
amt report of the Task rorce and review the entire matter
in the neat Congress.
light of statements recently made by S nator McCarth,
I std tUnk it rather unlikely that he would take action dua. Ing the

of the CIA in competition with the work of the Hoover Task Force.
