SUBJECT : Digital Cartographic Activities
1. OMB has initiated a process to bring about coordination
of digital cartographic activities of Federal Agencies, and to
this purpose has established a Federal Interagency Coordinating
Committee. The Geological Survey has been asked to organize and
chair this committee, and the Director of the Geological Survey
has invited us to participate.
2. Although our contribution to the activities will at
times be constrained by security considerations,--e believe there
is sufficient value in the effort to warrant our being as
supportive as we can. Development of standards throughout
Federal agencies will allow us to utilize digital data developed
elsewhere in the government, not only for mapping but to support
analysis in conjunction with other digital data bases.
3. I propose that Chief of our
Cartographic and Design Center, be our representative, and attend
the initial organizational meeting scheduled for later this
month.
Attached is a letter we have drafted for you to respond to
the invitation from the Director of the National Geological
Survey.

Dear Sir:
0
I welcome the opportunity for CIA participation in the effort
to coordinate digital cartographic activities in the Federal Government.
Although the Agency's contribution may be somewhat constrained by
security consideration, we believe such contribution as we can offer
and the value to our organization from this endeavor'make it well
worth our effort to do whatever we can.
Our representative to the Federal Interagency Coordinating
Committee will be Chief of the Cartographic
and Design Center in t the Directorate of Intelligence. He will attend
the initial meeting scheduled for 27 May, and we have forwarded his
name by telephone to Mr. Rupert B. Southard, Chief, National Mapping
Division, U.S. Geological Survey.
Sincerely,
William J. Casey
Director of Central Intelligence
