OMB has initiated a process to bring about coordination of digital cartographic activities of Federal Agencies, and to this purpose has established a Federal Interagency Coordinating Committee. The Geological Survey has been asked to organize and chair this committee, and the Director of the Geological Survey has invited us to participate. 2. Although our contribution to the activities will at times be constrained by security considerations,--e believe there is sufficient value in the effort to warrant our being as supportive as we can. Development of standards throughout Federal agencies will allow us to utilize digital data developed elsewhere in the government, not only for mapping but to support analysis in conjunction with other digital data bases. 3. I propose that Chief of our Cartographic and Design Center, be our representative, and attend the initial organizational meeting scheduled for later this month. Attached is a letter we have drafted for you to respond to the invitation from the Director of the National Geological Survey.
