Approved For ReIe so,20p6AQ1/121 .C, A,,RQli 8. B00985ROQQ 00040027-9 6 August 1973 MEMORANDUM FOR: FROM SUBJECT : Summer Internship I. General Continents The Summer Intern Program is, in my opinion, an excellent introduction to the functions and operations of the CIA. My summer internship has proved to be a very worthwhile experience. I shall always be indebted to the Agency both for the opportunity to work with so many friendly, talented people and for the opportunity to work with such a wealth of information and tech- nology. This summer has done much to enhance my knowledge,of geographic techniques and area studies. II. Specific Comments A. In-processing Considering the necessity for high-level security and the time involved in clearing new employees, I was pleased that the whole processing operation ran so smoothly. My only complaint in this area is the late notification date for most interns. I was not advised that I had been accepted for the intern program until after May 1. By that time I had "dangerously" refused two other job offers while waiting to hear from the Agency. Perhaps it would be helpful to move the deadline for application to the intern program ahead so that applicants could be notified by April 1. Although the date for making application would be early in the academic year, much confusion could be eliminated in the Spring when students begin to worry about summer employment prospects. B. Work Assignment I have absolutely no complaints about my summer work assignment in OBGI. The Mapping Program has been a valuable addition to my store of geographic techniques as well as to my Approved For Release 2006/01/12 : CIA-RDPB 00985R000100040027-9 CIA INTERNAL USE ONL Approved For Release 2006/01/12 : CIA-RDP86B00985R0QQ,100040027-9 background in Soviet area studies. The OBGI staff, especially those in the USSR/Europe branch, were all fantastically helpful and friendly. It's amazing that so many wonderful people could be gathered in one branch. C. Briefings I felt privileged to be given such an informative introduction to the many and varied functions of the Agency. It is helpful in any job to see where you fit into the overall picture. I was especially impressed by the briefing by Carl Duckett of DDS&T. I do feel that the interns need a briefing by someone from the DDO to help erase many of the misconceptions held by students (and people in general) as to the specific functions of the clandestine services. Another suggestion for the briefings is that actual tours, especially of NPIC, would be far more informative than the lecture approach. A short summarative statement of the functions of each division and how each fits into the whole picture followed by an actual tour to see a part of the daily routine of the particular division would be far more interesting in most cases. Also, the summer interns would like to know-what their counterparts in other divisions are doing. It would be nice to have a session in which the interns could share their summer experiences in a give-and-take discussion about the Agency. In this regard perhaps the "cocktail party" following our first session could better become a luncheon or dinner meeting toward the end of the summer. That kind of arrangement would be better for many pocketbooks, too. D. Future Plans As 'things stand now, I shall be returning to the University of Georgia at the end of September to begin work on my Ph.D in geography. I would most definitely like to be considered for another internship in the summer of 1974. After such a profitable summer with the Agency, I would eventually like to be considered for fulltime permanent employment. Sincerely Th Approved For Release?JQO ffl~O~ALCI DPII~?00985R000100040027-9
