1. The first positions were approved for seven Interns in Chinese Studies,.
five positions were filled:

2. On the tussta of a favorable evaluation of the pro-
gram and after canvassing the interests and needs of the
Directorate I proposed in a memorandum of 31 January 1967
that the Intern Program be continued, that it be expanded
to include graduate students in area studies other than
China, and that 20 positiona be approved for the sui r of

3. A list of about 55 potential candidates for the
19" program was generated by letters to academic contacts
by Jim & shell and myself and through regular recruitment
oba 1a. At present, the list has been shoved down to
about 20 and processing in underway 05.10.12. In addition,
all five of the 1967 group are planning to return. We nay
not fill all 18 positions, but I believe that we will come
