Dear Mr. Casey:
Recently I was visited by Dr. Malcolm Byrnes of the School of Arts
and Sciences at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Dr. Byrnes is quite interested in establishing a summer internship
program for his students which would allow them the opportunity to come
to Washington for the summer.
Ideally, such a program would offer the student an invaluable
chance to work within the federal government in his or her chosen
field and observe the operation of our government firsthand. Of
course, an additional advantage would be for the students to. live, work
and enjoy Washington, a city quite different from southern Louisiana.
This visit could well be the first for many of them to this area of the
country.
Dr. Byrnes will return to Washington in January to follow up on
any leads that I can provide to him. I would very much appreciate your
agreeing to visit with Dr. Byrnes to discuss the possibility of your
,agency's participation in such a program. Please contact me by writing
so that I can make the necessary arrangements. Your attention and
assistance is appreciated.
