SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM
FACT SHEET
The Summer Intern Program began in 1966 with initial focus
on Chinese area and language studies. Gradually, it has been
expanded to include other geographical? areas and academic
fields such as economics, engineering, geography, law, and
psychology. The majority of those selected for this program
have completed one or more years of graduate study; they must
be committed to attend graduate school the fall following com-
pletion of the internship.
The Intern Program has proved mutually beneficial. In-
terns have an opportunity to apply their academic skills to
the substantive work of the Agency and, at the same time, be-
come acquainted with professional foreign intelligence analysts.
The Agency benefits from the high quality of the Intern's
research projects. Many are published and distributed through-
out. the Intelligence Community. In this manner, the Agency is
able to assess the analytical ability and potential of the
Interns. The Interns also have weekly orientation sessions
with senior officials who acquaint them in detail with the work
of the Agency. Since Interns meet the same employment stan-
dards as regular employees, briefing officials are candid in
describing, the activities, duties, and responsibilities of
their components. This same frankness prevails in their re-
sponses to questions from the Interns that follow each presen-
tation.
Positive reaction to the assignments and briefings has
been consistently high over the years. As a result, competi-
tion for acceptance into the Program is very keen. Over a
ten year period, the number of Intern positions has increased
significantly. At the same time, the number of inquiries
received each year has increased at a greater rate.
For additional information, contact
Coordinator for Student Trainee Programs, Department A, Room
812, P.O. Box 1925, Washington, DC 20013.
The Agency is an equal opportunity employer with an ag-
gressive affirmative action plan.
