OER Recruiting at AEA Meetings, 27-30 December 1974 1. The San Francisco meetings of the AEA were very well attended, in part because one full day was set aside for recruiting before the sessions began. This new policy reflects two concerns: increasing attendance at the various meetings and accommodating the extremely large numbers of attendees looking for positions. The meetings were well reported by the local press. A persistent and reoccurring theme was the state of the job market. 2. The meetings took place at a time when the Agency was making headlines on "domestic spying" and other activities which in times past would certainly have resulted in visible and audible displeasure, at least on the part of some of the younger attendees. The OER recruting team observed no such reactions nor were there any reported in the local press. Clearly the number one priority was the bread-and-butter issue of a job. In one instance, a particularly well- qualified applicant was asked whether he had. any problems with the "spying" issue. He quickly said "no" and went on with the serious business of getting a job offer from the Agency. 3. The San Francisco recruiting effort by a team consistin of Mfr and was a solid success, partly because o the miserable ~o market for PhDs and near-PhDs. We had a substantial number of inquiries, which were pre-screened on the spot; 63 individuals survived the screening and were interviewed. Of these, 15 were rejected. The remaining 48 are of high quality; many are outstanding. Some 23 people were given the short form, which indicated a serious USE ONLY Approved For Release 2006/10/18: CIA-RDP86B00985R000100060040-1 Approved For Release 2006/10/18: CIA-RDP86B00985R000100060040-1 ~ 41M 1r AI -,n r M,FTr p,,~, -iiw - . Nineteen were given Part I of the PHS because they seemed eminently qualified for specific positions within OER. Already, five of these 19 have returned the forms. We also interviewed, and stand a good chance of getting, a candidate for our fellowship program -- a naturalized Chinese who handles both Chinese and Japanese fluently and has a good background in econometrics. The remaining six are being reviewed and may receive PHS's. MAURICE C.
