Approved For Release 2005/01/10 : CIA-RDP86B00985R000200100007-3 WORLD FERTILITY PATTERNS Age-Specific Fertility Rates for Countries of the World ? Graphic presentation of age-specific fertility rates available in the 1960s and most recent date for countries of the world. ? Table containing fertility statistics used in the graph for indicated years together with data code for countries of the world. ? Sources from which fertility statistics are obtained or derived. Prepared for the Office of Population, Agency for International Development August 1977 AGE-SPECIFIC FERTILITY RATES FOR COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD 1965 and Most Recent Date (In preparing the chart, an attempt was made to obtain data for 1965 and for the most recent year during the 1970's for which data were available. Where data for 1965 were not available, those for some other year during the 1960's were used. Comparisons between the two sets of data give some measure of what has happened to fertility during the last decade when family planning programs have expanded rapidly. Where data were available for one but not both periods, only one set of rates is shown.) In at least thirteen developed countries, the total fertility rates during the early 1970's fell below replacement level - less than two children per woman. Data for 25 less developed countries indicate an average reduction of more than one birth per woman during a span of less than one decade. In countries such as Mauritius, Reunion, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, a fertility decline of more than 1.5 births per woman occurred. In almost all these less developed countries where there has been a rapid reduction in fertility, family planning programs have greatly increased availability of contraceptive means and services. Improvements in methodology over the last decade probably mean that in general recent data are more reliable than older data, but this generalization does not preclude the likelihood that more recent surveys in some countries are in fact less reliable than older ones. In such cases, much detailed analyses are needed. In the present graphic presentation, data do indicate a substantial global trend toward lower fertility, particularly in the countries where organized efforts have been made to reduce fertility. Such data, derived from complete vital registration systems, censuses and/or surveys, were found for 138 (72 percent) of the 192 countries included in this chart. For the 54 countries, mainly in Africa and Asia, having either grossly inadequate or non- existent empirical data for providing usable age-specific rates, estimates of population size and crude birth rate for 1975 are given. Except for the addition of Taiwan, the countries and territories are those recognized by the United Nations. Age-specific fertility rates presented in this chart have been obtained from national statistical offices and reports prepared Venezuela Afghanistan Bahrain f / ; 965 ngladesh Bhutan Brunei Burma 63-65 /`' 1975 Estimates: f/ x,1970 1975 Estimates: Population - 1,175,000 Population - 30 386 000 Crude Birth Rate - 44 , , Crude Birth Rate - 40 China, Cyprus - ' "- a Gaza Hong Kong Rep. of Strip es: 1969 1965 00,000 ~'~ - 14 /~ ' .. 966 India Indonesia Iran Iraq 1968-69 1964-68 Israel Japan 1961 ~ ~ ~ Jordan Kampuchea /:
