1. Action required: Determination of a date for the next
JCI dinner and approval of the format proposed (in paragraph 3
below).
2. Background: Impetus for this dinner project came from
your meeting with the NIOs on 28 September when you called
3. Format prosposed for the dinner: The plan we used for
the Population Dinner was not wholly satisfactory. The following
suggestions are freely adapted from the models employed by the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Council

on Foreign Relations in New York.
5:30 - 6:00 Those invited assemble. Tea, sherry,
and tomato juice are served.
6:00 - 7:00 First session. Visiting authority makes
his presentation. One or more of us, by
prearrangement, offer critique. General
discussion follows if any time remains.
7:00 - 7:30 Dinner is served. Conversation is general.
7:30 Second session begins (possibly when
dessert is served). General discussion
resumes and continues until preferred
closing time (9:00 or later).
This format provides for a more leisurely beginning and for several
changes of pace. It also allows our guests and commentators to
make their remarks to people who are not eating while they cannot.
And there is a more relaxed postprandial period for general discussion.
4. Recommendations:
a. That one of the following dates be chosen for the dinner:
Tuesday, October 25
Wednesday, October 26
Friday, October 28
Monday, October 31
Wednesday, November 2
Friday, November 4
b. That the format suggested in paragraph 3 above be
approved for a trial run.
