SUBJECT : Discussion/Dinner Proposal for December, "The
Stability of Egypt at Peace?"
1 . Action Requested: Approval of the above subject for our next
discussion/dinner. The date, Thursday, 13 December, has been set aside
on your calendar for this purpose.
2. Background: Bob Ames suggests that this is an appropriate time
to consider the effects peace is having on Egyptian stability. The
discussion/dinner would coincide with work on the IIM of Egypt's political
stability. Our discussion would also look into the effects of a prolonged
peace on the Egyptian economy and on the Egyptian military.
3. Ames suggests that as our outside specialists we invite former
Ambassador to Egypt, Herman Eilts, who is now on the faculty of Boston
University, Professor Richard Mitchell of the University of Michigan, who
has been studying the religious right in Egypt (from where he recently
returned), and Bill Quandt of The Brookings Institution.
4. Recommendation: That you approve the subject and date proposed
above for the next scheduled DCI discussion/dinner so that planning may
proceed.
