SUBJECT . Request for Permission to Speak to
High School Class
1. I request approval to speak to my son's class in
Modern World History at Walter Johnson High School in
Bethesda, Maryland. My son and his teacher have asked me
to give a talk on the Middle East and Africa.
2. With regard to the Middle East I propose to discuss
mainly current developments in Lebanon but with some
references to related events elsewhere in the area. The
discussion on Africa would focus on developments in southern
Africa and the Horn of Africa. In both instances I would
be speaking in fairly basic and general terms and would
attempt to put what is happening in these areas into a
historical perspective. The talk would be unclassified.
3. I would, of course, avoid commenting on US policy
in these areas. My opinions would be confined to what I
perceive is happening rather than what we should do about it.
