On October 4, 1978 I attended an open meeting of the Department of Agricultural Economics (DARE) Graduate Student Society at the Univeristy of Maryland. My attendance at the meeting had been arranged through a member of the DARE faculty and officers of the Graduate Student Society. Students in the Department had been informed through a news- letter that I would discuss CIA career opportunities for agricultural economists. 2. The meeting was attended by about 20 graduate students--more than 70 percent of the full time enrollment. The meeting's principal speaker was the newly appointed Department Head, Dr. Virgil Norton. His candid discussion about internal, problems and plans was well received and generated a great deal of response from the students. After Dr. Norton's presentation, the students concluded business on organizational matters before my presentation. 3. The. purpose of my presentation was to inform students of the type of work being done in OER, the general working environment in the Agency, and the career oppor- tunities for an agricultural economist. The presentation generated numerous questions ranging from analytical techniques to promotion opportunities and career potential for minorities (women). Each student received a copy of Agency publications on "Career Opportunities--Agricultural Economic Research Positions" and "Notes on the General Working Environment for Economists". 4. After concluding the discussion with the group, I fielded questions from four individuals who expressed a strong interest in learning more about employment opportunities in OER and the Agency. These individuals were encouraged to prepare a resume and contact either myself or the personnel office address listed on the handout sheets. A letter of thanks will be sent to the Graduate Student Society for allowing me the opportunity to meet with the group.
