Ms. Emmy Combs, a friend of Professor John Kleber of our History Department and co-coordinator of the National Security class with me, said that you may be able to help us. The National Security program at Morehead State University is an elective course in the establishment and maintenance of national security.. The course.is open to anyone in the student body who desires to gain a greater understanding of Americats security system and individual responsibilities regarding national security without enrolling in our military science class. Students from all disciplines and academic ranks are enrolled in the course. The program is offered for a nine-week period each fall semester, with two class meetings per week. Specifically, some of the topics covered in the past have included "Moral Decisions and War," "Military.-Industrial Complex," "The Woman's Role in the Army," "The Foreign Policy Process," "Funda- mentals of Strategy and Defense Policy," etc. The lecturers have represented areas both from off campus and from the faculty of Morehead State University. Among the more noteworthy past off- campus speakers were General Harold K. Johnson, former Army Chief of Staff; Dr. Frank N. Trager, Director of National Security Pro- grams, New York University; Mr. Emanual Rosen, Principal Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense for Management Systems; Major General W.W. Scott, Commanding General, Army Readiness Region VI; and Dr. Gerald L. Steibel, Director of Foreign Affairs Research, the Research Institute of America. Approved For Release 2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP86B00985R000400050025-7 Approved For Releaa 2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP86B009 5 000400050025-7 June 7, 1978 Dr. Brian Latell In a "nutshell," the overall objective of the National Security course is to create an awareness in young men and women that they need in order to make the appropriate decisions demanded in a demo- cratic society; it provides a body of organized knowledge relating to the crucial problems of national security faced by our citizens. The topic we have in mind is "The Central Intelligence Agency and National Security." We have tentatively scheduled this subject for Thursday, October 5, 1978, at 10:20 a.m. The speaker would have one hour for the presentation and questions. We sincerely feel that a lack of understanding of national security problems is of paramount concern, and one of the best places to address that concern is in the academic community. This should - be an excellent opportunity to place the CIA in proper perspective in the national security picture. I will be departing; however, Major Michael Campbell will remain at the University throughout the summer if you have questions. LTC William McGee will arrive in August to take my place. -.Our phone numbers are area code 606 783-5290 and -3251. u- Sincerely, EDWARD J. BALD`A, JR.
