The Honorable Barry M. Goldwater
Chairman
Select Committee on Intelligence
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
I understand that, following Senator Frank Church's death,
his papers were given to Boise State University. I am concerned
about the probability that classified intelligence information
is included in Senator Church's files.
I understand further that among those who have considered
this problem are the Senate Historian, the Senate Legal Counsel
and the Director of the General Services Administration's
Information Security Oversight office, Steven Garfinkel.
I'm told that the bulk of the former Church Committee
papers were acquired by and are today controlled by the SSCI;
the papers at issue at Boise State were not, as I understand it,
Committee papers but were part of Senator Church's personal file.
I would appreciate any assistance that you and your staff
might render in determining whether classified intelligence
information is in fact in the collection and, if so, how best to
deal with the issue.
Sincerely,
William J. Casey
Director of Central Intelliapncp
