MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Central Intelligence
FROM: George V. Lauder
Director, Public Affairs Office
SUBJECT: Invitation to Address the Standard Club of Chicago
1. Action Requested: Accept or decline an invitation to address a
luncheon meeting of e Standard Club of Chicago sometime at a date convenient
to you on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in January, February, or March
1985.
2. Background: Mr. David W. Smerling, Chairman of the Civic Affairs
Committee of The Standard Club, at the suggestion of Club member Michael Shaw
invited you to be the guest speaker at one of their luncheon meetings in
Chicago. You declined at that time (mid August), but noted you would be
willing at a later date. The Standard Club came back with a list of available
dates for this fall, and you indicated that you could not commit at that time
(mid September).
This is the third invitation requesting a specific date. You could
expect an audience of approximately 300 people. confirmed that The
Standard Club is one of the city's most prestigious and respected social
clubs, comparable in stature to Chicago Club that you addressed in April. The
wealthy and influential membership of professional and financial leaders
includes most of Chicago's prominent Jewish citizens.
Recent speakers were Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, Edwin Black author of
"The Transfer Agreement", Katherine Wei author of "Second Daughter", and
Joan Peters author of "From Time Immemorial" (Arab-Jewish conflict over
Palestine). Since this is a private club, the media is not allowed to
attend. Publicity is limited to the club's newsletter. According to the
membership director, all members are U.S. citizens many of whose families have
been members since the mid 1800's. Previously fir. Shaw suggested that
arrangements could be made for you to speak to the Chicago Bar Association,
but their winter schedule is booked.
