SUBJECT Military Inputs for OER GNP Calculations
1. Attached are the figures for Military Machinery
and Military. Personnel for the years 1950-1974, broken
down by various categories. As was discussed pre-
viously, the Military Machinery figures include 80
percent of civilian personnel and the remaining 20 per-
cent a.re included in the Military Personnel figures.
All R&D was subtracted from the Military Machinery
figure.

2. The Military personnel figures include only
active duty pay. Retiree pay has been subtracted
from the total, and food and clothing have been included
as separate entries. All items with the exception of
clothing are directly available from OSR BEST-74
estimates. The clothing estimates were derived by
multiplying estimated Soviet active military manpower
times average clothing allowances established in
1965. The figures for 1950 are not contained in
the OSR BEST-74. They were generated using an older
run and linked by indexes to be comparable with the
remaining numbers. All numbers are in billions of
1970 rubles. If there are any questions, please con-
