SUBJECT: Meeting with Alan Thompson of NARS and
Request for Clarification of Code Designators
1. Mr. Alan Thompson, Chief of the Declassification Review
Division at NARS, visited CRD on 24 June 1983. He delivered for
Agency review a package of documents found in the General Records
of the State Department to which GAO has requested access as part
of their investigation of Nazi war criminals. CRD will coordinate
the review of these documents and is prepared to forward documents
to GAO under any conditions as agreed upon.
2. Mr. Thompson also raised questions about some of the things
NARS is finding during their review of the Nixon Papers. In files
concerning Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, the NARS reviewers
have encountered the following procedural code designators and would
like to know if CIA has an interest:

or not the Agency uses any of the above and to advise NARS. (C)

4. C/NIPG/IMS: It is requested that a search be made to deter-
mine whether there is a CIA interest in the code designators mentioned
in paragraph 2 above.
5. DO/IRO: CRD is conducting the initial review of the docu-
ments mentioned in paragraph 1 for the GAO and will coordinate that
review with the DO in the inmediate future. We also would be inter-
ested in knowing what agreement the Agency has with GAO in making
documents available to them, i.e. only unclassified or sanitized
documents, etc..
