SUBJECT: Weekly Report for Period Ending 6 May 1983
1. Progress reports on tasks assigned by DCI/DDCI:
The Office of Security is updating its information regarding the
progress made by the Department of State's security enhancement program;
we should be able to provide a detailed report to the DDCI, per his request,
within two or three weeks.
2. Items/events of interest:
b. The Director of Security, along with the Directors of Security
from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Security Agency, are
currently visiting the Polygraph School at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, in
connection with the possible expanded use of the polygraph in the Intelligence
Community and DOD.
d. The International Economics Course began on 2 May with 29 students,
16 from the Directorate of Operations and 13 from the Directorate of
Intelligence.
e. The Industry Familiarization Course concluded on 28 April.
f. On 26 April 40 students from the Army War College visited the
Agency and received briefings on the role of the DCI, technology transfer, and

g. Midcareer Course #84 ended on 29 April with a brief address and
presentation of certificates by the Deputy Director for Administration (DDA).
h. Members of the Professional Development Staff, Office of Training
and Education (OTE), will begin their interviews with senior Agency managers
this week on executive development. Office directors and their deputies will
be asked to comment on the recent report concerning executive development. We
plan to restructure the Senior Officer Development Course, in part on the
information gleaned from these interviews.
i. As the Spanish Section of the Language School, OTE, concludes its
final week of a highly successful intensive immersion program, the French
Section is making final preparations for its 9 - 27 May Total Immersion Program--
the largest in the Language School's history--consisting of 16 students and
five instructors who will participate on a full-time basis.
j. Several Spanish instructors as well as recent retirees are
assisting the FBI in administering oral proficiency tests to 800 FBI employees.
The national shortage of certified oral proficiency testers makes such inter-
agency collaboration vital.
1. The Information Science Center,OTE,is completing its fourth one-week
course for CIA analysts who are new users of the SAFE system. This course
concludes the initial transition training for CIA SAFE. From this point,
training courses for CIA analysts will be held on a monthly basis. The first
two SAFE courses for DIA analysts are scheduled for 13 - 17 and 20 - 24 June.

3. Significant activities anticipated during the coming week:
a. The monthly SAFE management and technical review will be held on
13 May at Headquarters.
b. A Conference on Ethics and the Profession of Intelligence will
be held 0 - 12 May. The Center for the Study of Intelligence plans to
summarize the conference proceedings in a special report to be published in
mid-summer.
c. The DDA and representatives from the Office of Communications
will visit with Systems Group, Computer
Sciences corporation, on 10 ID-la-y.
