WEEKLY REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING
20 September - 26 September 1984
I. Items or Events of Major Interest that Have Occurred
During the Preceding Week
ILLEGIB A. Request for Proposal (RFP) for Digital Prepress System in
the Printing & Photography Division (P&PD): The Technical
Evaluation Team (TET) for RFP 84B-337 visited the Boston area 13-
17 September to witness Efficiency of Operation Tests (EOT) and
to discuss Clarifications of Proposals submitted by Bedford
Computer Corporation, Xyvision Inc., and CAMEX Inc., the three
bidders determined to be in the competitive range for the RFP.
On 19 September, the TET journeyed to Baltimore to witness an EOT
on the PENTA Page Makeup System, which was specified as the
V pagination system selected in the CAMEX Inc. proposal. The trips
were very worthwhile and served to confirm the TET's conception
of the various systems capabilities. The TET met on 24 September
to re-evaluate the proposals based on the responses to the
requested clarifications and EOTs and forwarded a recommendation
to the Chairman of the Source Selection Board the same day. P&PD
is still confident of executing a contract for an Automated Page
_ Gad '.
Makeup system prior to 30 September,
B. ADP Activities: The two Xerox 2700 Electronic Printers
located in 124 P&PD (Data Input Area) are now operational. These
/printers can be used to print any VM file, NOMAD query response,
etc., in the P&PD Building instead of Headquarters. Printout
will be on 8 1/2 X 11 Xerox paper in the landscape format. A
memo will be circulated to explain in detail how to send files to
these printers.
C. Xerox 9900 Installation: The second Xerox 9900 was
/ installed in P&PD's Bindery and Reprographic Center (B&RC) this
V week and is now running in a test mode. Ken Peake of Xerox will
conduct 9900 training sessions next week for B&RC employees.
D. Copier Management Support: The total number of copier
/requests received by P&PD in FY-84, 174, reveals a 47% increase
in copier support required by Headquarters in FY-84 compared with

E. Canon to Supply Kodak with Copiers: The Canon and Kodak
companies jointly announced this week that at some undisclosed
ate, Canon will supply Kodak with medium volume copiers bearing
the Kodak label. Heretofore, Kodak has independently
manufactured only high volume copiers.
F. Photo Support: Polaroid Corporation was contacted
regarding their offer to manufacture film to customer
specifications. Photography Branch, P&PD, has several
applications which could utilize Polaroid instant film in 16/35mm
format with lengths of 100 feet and greater, particularly in
r;f motion picture and computer graphics. Presently Polaroid is
testing 100 and 400 foot rolls. The major stumbling block at
this point is their inability to process. Polaroid has developed
a prototype briefcase size processor which is working out well.
They estimate marketing a bulk instant film to be one year away.
