p.A Declassified and Approved For Release 2012/04/16: CIA-RDP87B00858R000400580025-2 NEW YORK 9"ImteD *etes senate April 10, 1986 The Honorable William Casey Director of Central Intelligence Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Bill: Executive RPpiairy 86- 1625X Recent reports have raised'serious questions regarding the activities of former D.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim during World War II. Waldheim served in the German Army between 1939- 1945 and was stationed in the Balkans during the years 1942-45. During this period, he served under a number of commanders, including General Alexander Loehr and General Reinhardt Gelham. General Loehr was tried and convicted of war crimes, including the mass deportation of Jews to concentration camps. Loehr subsequent- ly was executed for these crimes. General Geiham, meanwhile, served as head of Abhehr, the Nazi military intelligence organiza- tion. Waldheim served as an officer in this unit. I have been informed that following the war your agency came into possession of General Gelham's files. These documents could prove invaluable in confirming or refuting current allegations against Mr. Waldheim. Accordingly, I request access to any and all material in the possession of your agency which pertain to Kurt Waldheim's activities during World War II. I look forward to your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely, Alfonse D'Amato United States Senator Declassified and Approved For Release 2012/04/16: CIA-RDP87B00858R000400580025-2
