Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/15: CIA-RDP87B00858R000500780011-4 Central kgdlign AFxy Executive Registry The Honorable C. W. Bill Young House of Representatives Washington, D. C. 20515 21 June 1985 Dear Mr. Young: Followin u on our telephone conversation yesterday, I am sending you a copy of estimony before the House Armed Services Committee las a ope you'll find it useful. I personally have no doubts that the polygraph is the most effective tool we have to identify and screen out individuals whose employment or affiliation could jeopardize our national security. As you can see from Bill's remarks, in 1982 polygraph interviews by CIA developed significant information not surfaced by other techniques in 70 percent of our applicant cases, 25 percent of our probationary employee cases, 31 percent of our periodic reinvestigation cases, and 43 percent of our industrial cases. . I certainly remain a staunch advocate of administering polygraphs to anyone having access to sensitive intelligence data or national security information. Sincerely, 04 I'li. John N.
