_-... ___... _7 I Executive Registry 26 February 1985 MEMORANDUM FOR: See Distribution FROM: Executive Secretary SUBJECT: 6 March Visit to Headquarters of Rod McDaniel 1. Rod McDaniel, recently retired from the Navy, is the newly appointed Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Director of the White House's Crisis Management Center. He is, in fact, Richard Beal's replacement at the White House. Bob Kimmitt has advised that Rod's brief includes: overall responsibility for White House "Operations Center" activities (to include the Situation Room as well as the CMF); support for the national security apparatus (West Wing and NSC Staff) in all crisis, and crisis-related, situations; and, presumably, general support for McFarlane and Poindexter on national security matters. Kimmitt put Rod's job in this perspective: whereas Beal primarily concerned himself with getting something started, Rod is to make it work. 2. Following his get-acquainted calls on people at the White House and the NSC Staff, Kimmitt thought it would be a good idea for Rod to touch base with us here re what we do, how we lash up to the White House and, generally, to get aquainted. To that end, the following schedule has been put together: Wednesday, 6 March 0900 Agency Overview 0945 Call on DDCI 1000 M i na r C IA Gunn rt to CMF i n room 7F16 1115 Call on Dick Kerr 3. Some background on McDaniel. A 1956 graduate of Stanford University, he began a (surface ine) career in the Navy via OCS in 1957. Culminating his sea tours in cruisers and destroyers, he had two commands: a guided missile destroyer, and the cruiser USS Oklahoma City. His last sea assignment was as Chief of Staff, US Seventh Fleet.
