MEMORANDUM FOR: THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Meeting with RADM John Poindexter,
21 February 1985
1. Discussed the Thatcher visit and the upbeat nature of it.

bringing to bear on the Contras.

6. I then spoke at length on the critical nature. of the Philippines
political situation and the need for the United States to be prepared to
deal with any eventuality, i.e., Imelda taking over or short-term chaos
before the political situation could stabilize.
7. Director then spoke of the situation in Angola and how Savimbi
has the Cubans and the Angolans on the run yet our State Department
policy seems to be selling Savimbi out.

9. We then discussed the nd noted that
an NSPG was due on this subject. Poindexter said that a would set one
up.
11. I raised the question of the status of General Walters' freedom
medal. Poindexter wondered whether they ought to go through with it now
that Walters was going to the UN. I told him it would be a great calling
card if the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to the UN had just received a
freedom medal--that it would receive great worldwide press. Poindexter
said he would raise it with McFarlane.
