Ambassador Keeley is married to the former Louise
Schoonmaker. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
Their state of domicile is Florida.
During the past year, while at the Center for the Study of
Foreign Affairs, Keeley'has been writing a memoir of his
service as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires at the
Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, during the early years of the Idi
Amin regime, 1971 to 1973.
Ambassador Keeley was recently elected President of the
American Foreign Service Association, the professional
organization and trade union of American career diplomats. He
will resign that post when and if confirmed by the U.S.,Senate
as Ambassador to Greece.
Keeley has had a long and close association with Greece
dating back to his childhood. From 1936 to 1939 he lived in
Thessaloniki while his father was serving as the American
Consul General in that city. In 1946 he lived in Athens while
his father was Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General at
the Embassy. Keeley attended Athens College and worked as a
district secretary and interpreter at Tripolis in the
Peloponnesus for the Allied Mission for Observing the Greek
Elections.
Since 1970 Ambassador and Mrs. Keeley have regularly taken
their summer vacations in Greece.
The Ambassador's brother, Edmund L. Keeley, Professor of
English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at
Princeton University, is well-known in Greece as a translator
of the principal modern Greek poets: Cavafy, Seferis, Elytis,
Sikellianos and Ritsos. He is also a novelist and has
published several books of criticism on modern Greek
literature. He is currently teaching at the University of
Athens under the Fulbright program.
