"Eyes and Ears of the Free World". We believe you will be pleased to learn that our organization, The Association of Former Intelligence Officers, has adopted your words as the theme for our tenth annual convention to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rockville, Maryland on 19 and 20 October. This group of former intelligence professionals was formed in 1975 because its founders recognized a desperate need to defend the active intelligence community from the widespread attacks of the media, certain congressmen, and extremist groups who were determined to destroy our "first line of defense." That handful of "defenders" has now grown into a responsible and credible association of former officials from every intelligence organization in the U.S. government. Nation-wide, and in our second or third careers, we are dedicated solely to the development of a national understanding of the need for an effective intelligence capability for our country. It is our custom each year to invite the officials who are currently heading the components of the U.S. Intelligence Community to our concluding banquet, there to join with the intelligence leadership and officials of past years. We would be most highly honored if you and Mrs. Reagan could attend this gathering, and if you would consent to address our assembly. While your D-Day Remembrance interview with* Walter Cronkite indicates you have more than casual qualifications for membership in our group, your words and actions in office have established beyond a doubt that you agree with the aims of our Association, and the necessity.for it. Whether or not you can attend our function, we would like you to know how deeply we appreciate the support you have provided the Intelligence Community - "The Eyes and Ears of the Free World." Respectfully, a kf in Major General, USA(Ret.) President 11.1 11 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2009/12/03: CIA-RDP87M00539R002904750019-2
