Dear Colleague:
I cordially invite you to a special Face-to-Face dinner
discussion on the problems of modern American foreign policy on
Thursday, December 5, 1985. James Chace, Godfrey Hodgson, and
Sanford Ungar will speak on "Estrangement: America and the World."
Our session features the Endowment's 75th anniversary publica-
tion in which twelve prominent writers explore themes and events
in U.S. postwar experience that contribute to current foreign
policy dilemmas. At our program, the book's editor Sanford Ungar
will discuss the roots of America's sense of alienation from much
of the world community. Foreign policy commentator James Chace
will explore America's search for invulnerability and British
journalist Godfrey Hodgson will discuss how domestic developments
during the 1960s and 1970s weakened America's self-confidence and
its role in the world. We look forward to a lively discussion of
these and other perspectives from this provocative collection.
For those who are planning to attend, the Endowment will be
pleased to provide a gift copy of Estrangement: America and the
World in advance of the program. Please use the enclosed card to
indicate your plans to attend and the address where you wish the
book to be sent.
We will meet in the Carnegie Conference Center, 11 Dupont
Circle, 8th Floor (entrance on New Hampshire Avenue, across from
the Dupont Plaza Hotel entrance). Commercial parking is now
available in the building. You are invited for cocktails at
6:00 pm. Our speakers will open the discussion at 7:00, followed
by comments and questions until dinner at 8:00. Discussion will
continue after dinner until 10:00 pm.
We look forward to seeing you on December 5. We kindly ask
that you respond-by mailing back the enclosed card or by calling
Julie_ Reed at 797-6414 at your earliest convenience but no later
than November 25
Sincerely,
YvMne F. Thayer
