Dear Mr. Casey: November 4, 1985
Thanks for your note of October 25th.
Let me keep trying. You suggest you can talk publicly
about "the threat of terrorism" and about the
"Soviet Communist threat around the world." Fine.
And on a personal note, could you talk about the
stresses and doubts involved in sacrificing private
life for public endeavor?
I fe sure we could put together a useful, engaging
and titually satisfactory interview.

Dear Mike,
Thanks for your note. I too enjoyed our meeting and appreciate your

I am still deliberating. You will

So, about the only subjects you list I could contemplate talking publicly
about are the threat of terrorism, which is something the public should know
about, and aspects of the Soviet Communist threat around the world, both of
which I touched lightly in this week's TIME.
In any event, let me deliberate a little more and keep it on ice for now.
Yours,

Thank you for your letter of 16 October.
As I mentioned to you, I have:-serious reservations about participating in
an interview for "60 Minutes." My position obviously limits what I can say in
public, especially on some of the topics you wish to raise. Perhaps at some
point in the future I may have 'some message on U.S. intelligence or the state
of the world I would like to convey via television. If so, I will be in touch.
Sincerely,
William J. Casey

Dear Mr. Casey:
October 16, 1985
I enjoyed our meeting last Thursday and want to follow it
up with a list of subjects we might undertake were you to
see your way clear to do an interview.
But first of all, let me express my thanks that you kept
your appointment with me on that hectic and remarkably
successful day And talking of
successes, under your stewardship the CIA has achieved
many intelligence coups, including that most recent
We would like to discuss some of those successes. Also
we'd like to hear you talk about:
The interview could take place at your convenience in
Washington, or if you wish, in New York.
As I said during our meeting, you can tape the entire inter-
view and have your representative present to monitor whatever
you say for national security implications.
It aas a pleasure to meet you. Ira Rosen and I look forward
to/seeing you again soon.
