On 2 April 1985, the House Subcommittee on Foreign Operations of the House Committee on Appropriations was given an overview of Israel, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt and briefed on Arab-Israeli issues by Director Office of Near 25X1 East/South Asia Analysis, an , one of h is 25X1 analysts. The members present were: Representative Representative David R. Obey (D., WI) - Chairman Matthew F. McHugh (D., NY) Representative Representative Representative Representative Charles Wilson (D., Julian C. Dixon (D., Mickey Edwards (R., John E. Porter (R., TX) CA) OK) IL) Representative Robert J. Mrazek (D., NY) Professional Staff Member Terry Peel was also present. 2. The purpose of the briefing, which lasted 90 minutes instead of the allotted one hour, was to prepare the Members for their trip to Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Israel during the period 7 - 16 April 1985 (see attachment). We were to provide a political-economic overview of the region and key issues DIA was scheduled to follow us with a military update. As the briefing unfolded, however, we were asked by several of the Members to discuss the Arab-Israeli military balance despite a large DIA contingent waiting in the wings. Representative Dixon commented later in the day to me at another meeting that he did not stay for the DIA portion because he usually found their briefings less than useful. Mr. Obey alluded to this sentiment when he sent his compliments, via Mr. Peel the next, day, for an outstanding and informative session.
