SUBJECT: Update Briefing for Representative Solarz and
Leach on Afghanistan
1. On 28 February 1985, in Room H-139, The Capitol,
Representatives Stephen Solarz (D., NY) and Jim Leach,
(R., IA), rece' briefing the situation in d an update Afghanistan by7 Near East
Division, Directorate of Operations (NE DO). This briefing
was held prior to a Hearing before the Subcommittee on Asian
and Pacific Affairs, House Foreign Affairs Committee by
representatives from the Directorate of Intelligence, State,
and the Defense Intelligence Agency, on Pakistan.
Representative Solarz had received a briefing on this
topic last year and requested the update so that he and
Representative Leach would be able to fend-off any improper
questions that might arise from other Members on the Sub-
committee during their Hearing on Pakistan.
2. Representative Solarz started the briefing off by
asking if there had been any chances in the program since he
was last briefed.

4. The briefing seemed to go quite well. Representative
Leach only asked two questions, but listened to the briefers
with great interest. The room was monitored throughout the
briefing and there were no staffers in attendance.
