SUBJECT: Briefing for House Foreign Affairs Committee,
Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East on
the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe
1. On 24 January 1985 at 1000 hours in room 2200,
Rayburn House Office Building, the Subcommittee on Europe
and the Middle East was briefed on the Soviet Union and
Eastern Europe. Security was present and a transcript was
taken. The briefing was

5. Mr. MacEachin an presented overviews of
their respective areas, text attached. Each Member was also
given a package of graphics to accompany the briefing,
copies attached. The atmosphere was cordial and the Members
were attentive and actively engaged in questioning. The
briefing lasted about two hours, with the question and
answer period consuming well over half of the time.

9. There is no follow-up from the briefing. Mr. Van
Dusen, the Subcommittee Staff Director, subsequently
informed me that Chairman Hamilton had commented that he
found the briefing unusually useful. He said, "Lee really
