ADMINISTRATIVE - INTERNAL USE ONLY f - 1 ? 11 September 1985 STAT STAT FROM SUBJECT Legislative Li Curator, Historical Intelligence Collection : Meeting with Two House Staff Members 1. On 28 August 1985 I had lunch outside Headquarters with Tom Smeeton of the House Foreign Affairs Minority Staff, and Dr. John Dugan, Staff Director of a Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science and Technology. The event occurred at the initiative of Smeeton, who wished to reunite three individuals who had been in graduate school together. While the event was mainly a social occasion, two subjects raised are worth LL's attention. STAT 2. Noting Dugan's position I rai d the case who STAT works in HIC and has been nominated by o to e a candidate for the Space Shuttle; NASA is interested in es ng the effects of zero gravity on victims of multiple sclerosis. Dugan enthusiastically offered to help lobby on the Hill. He said he had been with NASA for 12 years, believed the experiment well worth doing, and would be willing to speak to the Chairman STAT of his Committee which, he pointed out, approves NASA's budget. I thanked him for his offer and said I would pass it along t who could mention it STAT the next time contacted her. Since t en as been in STAT contact with ugan and o ers whose names Dugan provided to her. 3. For LL's background, I sholld add that I tified the irect of OCR STAT and the Office of Public Affairs of approach t hen it occurred three weeks ago. I have informed o this informal offer of Congressional support but will let LL pass on this particular news to Public Affairs if it wishes to do so. STAT STAT 4. The second topic concerned a new book just received in the Historical Intelligence Collection, Viktor Suvorov} Aquarium. Smeeton said that Representative Henry Hyde had a strong personal interest in the Shadrin case (a Soviet defector lured back by the Soviets). I commented that Aquarium contained a reference to that case and I would be glad to send Smeeton a stock copy for Hyde's retention, but I would notify LL.
