SUBJECT Conference on "Europe in the Eighties."
1. Unless you foresee a problem vri th i t, I pl art to begi n
preparations to hold a conference of academics and government people on
the subject topic early next Spring. The agenda will call for a
prospective look at likely European internal and foreign developments and
their possible implications for the US. I hope that the meeting will
provide grist and inspiration for a number of research and estimative
projects in the coming year or so. Although the agenda is not yet
complete, it will include the following topics:
Europe's economic options
The security debate
Prospects for European coPtesion and cooperation
West European relations with the USSR and Eastern Europe
The Atlantic connection
Europe and the third world, etc.
2. UD/EUItA has agreed to contribute to the
conference, and I am certain that State/INR will cooperate in the venture
as well.
