Just a brief note to let you know that we are moving crab-like toward
the conference we discussed some time ago. Inevitably, its terms of
reference have changed as more people have become involved in its
planning.
At any rate, we contemplate holding a conference on "Europe in the
Eighties" at the Department of State on Thursday and Friday, April 5 and
6, 1984. As you can see from the tentative agenda attached, the first
session will deal with Europe's economic future with two speakers
introducing the subjects of Europe's economic options, and the problems
and prospects of EC enlargement. Two discussants will precede the
general discussion.
I hope your calendar will permit you to join us, either as an
introductory speaker on Economic Community prospects or as a discussant.
We hope to encourage you to accept the former role by not requiring any
formal paper and assuring you that the presentation need not be longer
than 15-20 minutes. We are trying to get Lawrence Krause or Fred
Bergsten to lead off on the economic forecast.
Let me know if you can be with us in April. If so, I will try to
keep you informed periodically about the list of participants, and State
will keep you abreast of the adminstrative arrangements.
