RESEARCH AND
ENGINEERING
(SAA)
Dr. Julian Nail
National Intelligence Officer
For Science & Technology
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D. C. 20505
I have recently received a stimulating briefing by several
members of The Futures Group
The briefing concerned the STAT
results of some work or TTAC they have recently completed that
developed quantitative measures of jet engine technology, and
compared Soviet rates of progress to U.S. progress in jet engine
technology.
I was much impressed with their approach and with the results
obtained. I believe this is the type of work we ought to be
sponsoring in order to gain a better understanding of trends in
relative US/USSR technology. Results like I was shown could be
used in NIE 11-12. They are also useful for assessing the
impact of technology transfer on Soviet technology. I would
hope that the Agency would continue to support this type of
research.
I recommend you hear the briefing, if you are not already
familiar with this work.
Sincerely,
Paul J. Berenson
Special Assistant
