The attached concerns Japanese language training within FBIS. I'm told this is done rather often. The class will be held in conjunction with the weekly language support to be provided for an indeterminate period by one IO rotationally assigned from among the above five officers. Tentative agreement was reached on the following points: 1. The class will be held on Wednesday from 1030 to 1130. 2. The emphasis of the instruction will be on reading and recognition of Katakana and Hiragana, using samples taken from newspapers and magazines. In addition, the instruction will include recognition of numbers, Japanese company names, and the development of elementary level conversational skills. 3. The charts of Katakana and Hiragana syllabaries prepared by JPRS for its contractors will be used-as?basic teaching materials. 4. All five members from UD and NEAD present at the meeting will participate in this project. The linguistic support to be provided JPRS will include: 1. Review of edited translations to resolve editorial/linguistic problems remaining in the text. 2. Verbal evaluations of JPRS contractor translations to provide a quick assessment of a contractor's level and field of specialization. 3. Assist in evaluating applicants' tests.
