+ At the request of Ambassador Nitze's office, relaying a White
House request, FBIS verified a 1972 translation of then-Soviet Defense
Minister Grechko's statement to.the Supreme Soviet Presidium on the
ratification of the ABM treaty. Grechko stated that the treaty "imposes
no limitations on the performance of research and experimental work aimed
at resolving the problem of defending the country against nuclear missile
attack," a statement consonant with the U.S. position on SDI. A photo-
copy of the PRAVDA repo forwarded to the White House speech writing
staff at their request.
+ FBIS is providing assistance to the State Department during
periods of summer leave and staff turnover. An FBIS senior analyst of
Soviet affairs is serving as political officer at the U.S. Embassy in
Moscow for a month, and a China analyst is covering Sino-U.S. and
Sino-Soviet relations for two months in the Department's Bureau of
Intelligence and Research.
