FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE
Of Special Interest This Week
+ Marking another addition to Lebanon's media war participants,
the new Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, affiliated with the Lebanese
Forces, inaugurated television transmissions on 23 August. FBIS has put
it on coverage.
+ The U.S. Embassy Amman has asked FBIS for a wrapup of Moscow
comment e Jordanian-PLO accord, Jordanian-PLO-U.S. talks and related
issues.
+ FBIS has been asked again this year to process reaction from
Latin American media to an upcoming major U.S. maritime operation against
drug smugglers. The operation, carried out by Coast Guard and Navy ships
and supported by the National Narcotics Interdiction System under the
auspices of the Office of the Vice President, is a repeat of last fall's
interdiction effort.
+ At the request of OGI, FBIS translated two Soviet forgeries--a
leaflet in French purportedly written by the "moral majority German
section" dealing with the "AIDS epidemic" in the West and a letter
allegedly written by U.S. Ambassador to Austria Helene Von Damm to the
Austrian Defense Minister containing a proposal for Austrian-NATO air
surveillance cooperation. The documents were for use by the DDI in a
briefing to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. 0
+ In reaction to events in South Africa, the FBIS Swaziland Bureau
has begun sending to selected consumers lists of items monitored from
Johannesburg television. DI consumers have thus faded three
videotapes sent to Headquarters by air courier.
+ At the request of INR, FBIS forwarded a translation to Senator
Byrd of then-Soviet Defense Minister Grechko's 19 September 1972 Supreme
Soviet speech on ABM ratification. In July, FBIS had verified for
Ambassador Nitze's office that in this speech Grechko stated that the
treaty "imposes no limitations on the performance of research and experi-
mental work aimed at resolving the problem of defending the country
against nuclear missile attack."
